The highly-anticipated “New Kids on the Dock” event that hits Liverpool Olympia on June 7th has received a significant boost today as local favourite and 2012 Olympian, Tom Stalker, was added to the bill. After racing to 2-0 since handing back his treasured national vest earlier this year, Stalker has vowed to stay busy for the apprenticeship stage of his career and that has certainly been the case thus far. Promoter Dave Coldwell is delighted to be working with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Sport once again and is looking forward to seeing Stalker perform alongside his fellow Scouse prospects.
“June 7th was already shaping up to be an important night for the next generation of Merseyside boxing and that has been further strengthened by the addition of Tom Stalker to the show,” spoke Coldwell. “Tom has made a solid start to his professional career so far and he’s one of many fighters that Liverpool can be extremely proud of. There’s been a big buzz about him because of his amateur achievements and the noise that he brings to an event is unbelievable. It’ll be a pleasure to have Tom boxing on one of my shows on June 7th.”

After months of deliberating, Liverpool’s highly-rated Robbie Davies Jnr has inked a long term deal with Coldwell Boxing after resisting various offers from rival promoters. The Kirkby prospect who has a wealth of international amateur experience has been undecided on his career since being on the sour end of a controversial decision in last year’s ABA final against Louis Adolphe. The temptation of pursuing a Team GB position was outweighed by professional dreams, which has led Dave Coldwell to add another name to his rapidly expanding stable.
“I’m over the moon to have a talent like Robbie Davies in my team because this is a kid who has a seriously big future ahead of him,” buzzed Coldwell. “He’s got a ton of amateur experience behind him and he’s been extremely unlucky in not adding to the huge number of titles he won as an amateur because I know he’s been on the wrong end of a few bad decisions. I can tell this is a hungry fighter who’s got a lot to prove and everyone at Coldwell Boxing is desperate to see him get going.”
Boxing seemed a logical choice for the talented Merseysider as his father, Robbie Davies Snr, was one of Liverpool’s most entertaining fixtures throughout the 1970s and his unpaid career included a Commonwealth Games bronze medal and an appearance at the legendary 1976 Montreal Olympics. With the younger Davies mirroring his father by clinching a fine array of amateur honours, the former Knowsley Vale ABC star is now set to embark on a new adventure that will hopefully reap future rewards.
“This is a decision that I’ve took a long time to make but I had to make sure everything was right before taking a big step,” revealed Davies. “My time as an amateur was great and I’m happy with everything I achieved but there’s a new challenge ahead for me now and I can’t wait to get started. I’ve been careful in selecting the team that I want to help me guide me towards titles and with Dave Coldwell promoting me and Dave Tonks training me, I definitely believe I’ve got a good team in place to take me as far as possible. Liverpool is booming as a boxing city at the moment and I can’t wait to be a part of it.”
With Davies becoming the fifth member of Coldwell Boxing’s Scouse portion, the popular promoter is desperate to bring more shows to the city. “Liverpool is somewhere that I’ve wanted to promote shows on a regular basis because they’re a smart boxing audience and I think they’d appreciate the vision that Coldwell Boxing has for the sport. We’ve been doing superb shows in Yorkshire and Manchester and with the likes of Derry Mathews, Junior Jones, Anthony Jevons, Chris Metcalf and now Robbie Davies on our team, there’s no reason why we can’t bring memorable nights to Liverpool.”
A keen spectator at Liverpool’s Echo Arena last Saturday was Yorkshire-based promoter, Dave Coldwell, who was in attendance to oversee the progress of two of his booming stable as Chris Metcalf and Derry Mathews were in action. Also catching Coldwell’s eye was Blackpool’s Scott Cardle who prepared for his April 20th meeting with Coldwell Boxing’s Maxi Hughes by outpointing Yves Mesny over four rounds. This forthcoming Central Area title tussle between unbeaten prospects is a fascinating contest and Coldwell is confident that his man can get the verdict.
“Scott Cardle has made quite a name for himself since he turned professional as he’s been kept busy and has featured on some massive shows over the last twelve months. I had the pleasure of having him fight on one of my shows back in February so I know what he’s capable of but I’m fully expecting Maxi to go out there and upset a lot of people in Cardle’s backyard. I fully expect Scott to go on and have a very successful career but I just feel that Maxi has a little too much for him at this stage of their respective careers and I think that will be the deciding factor.”
Since turning to the paid code in the latter stages of 2010, Doncaster’s Hughes has slowly built up a respectable nine fight undefeated ledger with the only blemish occurring in 2012 against fellow prospect, Ronnie Clark. That fight was deemed a draw but Hughes had to contend with a horrific cut that was suffered early into the bout. Coldwell believes that his charge is ready to be let off his leash and victory over Cardle will certainly open more lucrative doors.
“This is a huge opportunity for Maxi but I think he’ll grab it with both hands because I know exactly the type of character that he is. I’ve wanted to give Maxi a huge test for some time now and I was hopeful of making a good fight for him on my “New Sensations” show back in February but that never came off. Now he has the big fight in front of him and I know it’s a fight that he’s going to perform in and come away with his reputation enhanced. People are going to be in for a shock on April 20th.”

After being on the sore end of a controversial verdict against Shayne Singleton earlier this month, Driffield’s Curtis Woodhouse became a media phenomenon days later when he tracked down a social media abuser and forced the troll into an embarrassing backtrack. With a hectic period now behind him, Woodhouse is now looking forward and his next outing will take place on May 17th at Sheffield’s Pond Forge Arena. Dave Coldwell is looking forward to seeing his entertaining charge back in the ring.
“As far as I’m concerned, Curtis should be going into this fight as English champion but we all know what happened there so it’s time to move on and get Curtis back into title contention as soon as possible. It’s been a crazy few weeks for Curtis but his popularity has never been higher and I’m certain that people will want to go come out and support him following the spat that he had on Twitter. Once they do that, they’ll see one of the most entertaining fighters in Britain and a fighter who gives 110 percent every single time because he loves giving fans a memorable night’s action.”
After performing so admirably in the 10st division for the last twelve months, Woodhouse will now operate a weight category lower at lightweight and with a cluster of exciting names already operating at 135lbs, Woodhouse’s addition will certainly be a welcome one.
“This move to lightweight is Curtis’ decision and I’d advise everyone not to write him off because he’s fully focused on causing a real stir domestically. His next fight is going to be made somewhere around 9st 11lbs because we want to see how he copes with the extra weight loss but if all goes to plan the we could be looking at some fantastic match-ups in the near future.”
As well as Woodhouse, the Sheffield show will also feature the rising names of Yorkshire boxing as Nav Mansouri and Chad Gaynor will both be in action with the former possibly participating for the English strap. The BBBC have nominated the Rotherham prospect to contest the vacant title and Coldwell is hopeful that the fight can take place on his forthcoming show.
“Behind the scenes, I’m doing everything I can to get this fight made for Nav because I really think that a title fight like this will bring the best out of him. The board want him to face Nasser Al Harbi so we’ll see what happens there but it’d be a nice reward for Nav to fight for a belt because he’s really knuckled down in the last twelve months. He’s coming along nicely now and he’s exactly where we want him to be so as long as he keeps winning and stays impressing then we’ll continue to support him in everything he does.”
Coldwell added, “As for Chad Gaynor, he’s one of the best up and coming fighters in this country right now and he’s going to surprise a lot of people when he starts fighting for titles. He had a good workout last time out and I’m definitely looking to step him up in rounds and class in the near future because I think he’s got the hunger and talent to carve out a really good career for himself.”
This show will be available live on the innovative Coldwell Television App but if you want to have a sneak preview of the star names that are going to be in action on May 17th then don’t hesitate to download the App now and take a look at the catalogue of fights that is currently available.
