Woodhouse v Miles set to be 'Fight Of The Year'

CURTIS WOODHOUSE is fired up for what he believes could be the ‘fight of the year’ with Dale Miles.

The former footballer now light-welterweight, 32, meets with Alfreton's Miles, 27, in a British title eliminator on June 8th at Rotherham's Magna Centre and fireworks are expected.

Both fighters have earned themselves reputations as big hitters. Whilst Woodhouse has ended all of his last six wins early, Miles has stopped nine out of his twelve opponents inside the distance too.

Woodhouse doesn't believe that either of them have the best defences and he is preparing for a war of attrition that could end explosively.

He said: "Neither of us is going to outbox the other because we're not capable of doing that.

"Dale can really whack and if he hits me flush it could be lights out. But the same goes for me.

"It's going to be a great fight to watch because we're both going to be going hell for leather.

"It's probably going to come down to who's got the better chin but I want to win so badly.

"People laughed when I said that I wanted to be British champion five years ago and now I'm only one fight away from a crack at it."

Woodhouse still sees Miles as a dangerous unbeaten fighter despite his cuts loss to Tyrone Nurse in Prizefighter earlier this year.

"You can't read too much into that defeat because I think he was on the way to stopping Tyrone," said Woodhouse.

"Dale can flat out fight and he's like me in that regard. I can't wait to get in the ring now."

The winner of Woodhouse and Miles will take on the winner of Ashley Theophane and Steve Williams, who fight next weekend in Liverpool.

A packed undercard has been arranged for ‘Real Steel’ with another former footballer in Nathan Graham, travelling north to face unbeaten Rotherham fighter Navid Mansouri at light-middleweight.

Mansouri has been tuning up for the fight with sparring the now world champion Paulie Malignaggi in Milan.

Former ABA champions Hosea Burton from Manchester and Jason Cunningham from Doncaster will feature. As well as Sheffield’s unbeaten Joe Rodgers and Barnsley’s newly-crowned British Masters champion Matthew Mallin and unbeaten Doncaster light-heavyweight Daniel Slaney and Rotherham cruiserweight Karl Bell.

BELLEW V MCINTOSH FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE - BELLEW EXPECTING "BRUTAL KNOCKOUT"

By Chris Walker

Liverpool’s Tony Bellew will have to wait just a tad longer to come face to face with former European champion, Danny Macintosh, as the Norfolk banger no-showed his final press commitment due to traffic reasons. The pair meet at the Liverpool Echo Arena on Friday night for Bellew’s British light-heavyweight title and the champion promised that his opponent can expect a painful evening.

“A brutal knockout is all that I’ll be satisfied with come fight night,” declared Bellew. “He’ll turn up Friday because he’s all about the cheque but I’m going to make sure that he earns every single penny of the purse that he’s fighting for. I’ve got real aspirations to go to the top in this game and I can’t afford to look anything less than 100% on Friday night and that means I’m going to have put Danny Macintosh asleep and render him unconscious.”

Show promoter Dave Coldwell was “extremely disappointed”with Macintosh’s absence but has promised fans that they can expect “a quality fight” when he turns up on Friday. “This is a fight that stood out to me when I saw it at the board meeting” revealed the Sheffield based promoter. “Everyone knows what type of excitement Tony Bellew brings to the table and Macintosh is from the Ingle gym, and I know that their fighters can certainly let their hands go. This has all the makings of a domestic classic and I’m certain that both fighters will deliver on the night.”

Eddie Hearn, co-promoting the event, was also eager to discuss the potential of this fight. “For those turning up on Friday night, they’re getting to see the country’s number one light-heavyweight fighter because I believe Tony Bellew is that man. I believe he beat Nathan Cleverly last year and I also believe he has what it takes to go on and become a world champion. Danny Macintosh is standing in the way of that so now it’s up to Bellew to go out in front of his hometown crowd on Friday and give them a performance that shows he’s capable of bigger things.”

Also announced at the press conference was the withdrawal of Jason Cook, who was set to face John Watson over eight rounds. Darren Hamilton steps in to replace him.

Tickets for “The Big Bang” featuring Tony Bellew v Danny Macintosh, John Watson Jnr v Darren Hamilton and a stacked undercard starring a number of the country’s leading prospects can be purchased from the Liverpool Echo Arena box office or by contacting 0844 8000 400

KIERAN FARRELL LANDS CENTRAL AREA TITLE FIGHT

COLDWELL BOXING is pleased to announce that new signing Kieran Farrell will fight for the Central Area lightweight title.

The Heywood fighter will return to action in May and then contest his first title fight at Bolton's Reebok Stadium on June 22nd.

His opponent will be Nottinghamshire's Joe Elfidh, who beat former ABA champion Joe Hughes in his first fight back from a four year absence.

With both fighters unbeaten and a title at stake, promoter Dave Coldwell is expecting a great crossroads fight.

He said: "It's going to be a cracking fight. Kieran's served his apprenticeship in boxing and when he signed with me we wanted to get him the title fights.

"He's got his first fight with us in Birmingham in May and he's got to win that or all bets are off. But what I like about Kieran is that he's an old-school professional. He lives, eats and breathes boxing and I expect him to come through that no problems.

"Joe's coming off a great win himself and he's got great attributes as a fighter and with the Central Area title at stake too it should be a great fight for the fans and one they want to see.

"Kieran's got a great following in and around Bolton and everyone there will see two fighters who have come to fight."

Farrell, 21, is delighted at the prospect of competitive bouts and believes Elfidh will bring the best out of him.

"Before I signed with Dave I saw that he was willing to roll the dice and that's what I'm like", said Farrell.

"I've done my learning in boxing and I'm still unbeaten. I want to face the best and test myself that's why I've just been sparring with Ashley Theophane, the British champion a division up.

"Joe has had a lay-off from boxing but came back with a good win and he's basically in his prime but my power is underestimated."

Elfidh's manager and promoter Stefy Bull is pleased that he's finally found a good match for his 32-year-old.

"I'm more than over the moon to find Joe a tough fight like this," he said.

"We were chasing Tommy Coyle but his management team didn't want the fight so when Kieran's name popped up I didn't have to think twice

"We arranged it all quickly with Dave and it should be a good fight because it's two kids who aren't afraid to lose their '0' and they know that they can come back from a defeat

"As a former lightweight myself I've kept an eye on Kieran and I rate him as a fighter. He's been on one of Jamie McDonnell's undercards before and I think it'll be a hard fight but neither of them have much to lose and credit to them for taking it."

Farrell will fight on the 11th May at New Bingley Hall, Birmingham in a "tune up fight" against a yet to be named opponent.

QUIGLEY RELISHING HOMETOWN PERFORMANCE

After showcasing his aggressive, eye-pleasing style to a wide television audience in Prizefighter last September, and against Erick Ochieng in January, Liverpool’s Nick Quigley gets a grand homecoming on April 27th. The Tower Hill youngster tackles old foe Kevin McCauley at the Echo Arena on the undercard of Tony Bellew’s maiden Brirish title defence against Norfolk puncher, Danny Macintosh.

“It’s finally good to be fighting in my hometown,” buzzed Quigley. “Thirteen fights in and I’m fighting at home, it’s certainly been a long time coming hasn’t it? I’ve waited a long time for this and I’m looking to send everyone home happy. This is a moment that I’ve wanted badly and I get to do it in the number one venue that the city has to offer. Boxing at the Echo Arena has always been a dream of mine and I’m going to enjoy every single moment of it.”

Amassing his ledger against the familiar list of prospect opponents, Quigley ran up seven straight wins before entering the popular Matchroom tournament last autumn. Wins against city rival, Steve Harkin and Kris Agyei-Dua paved the way to the final against substitute, Robert Lloyd-Taylor, but the Merseyside man fell agonisingly short. His 2nd place finish was rewarded with an English title shot against Ochieng and after nine exhausting rounds; Quigley was compassionately rescued by his cornerman, and father, Tony Quigley Snr.

“That fight with Ochieng was a big learning curve for me and I’ve been working hard on putting right what went wrong that night. I’ve got no problems fighting at a fast pace because I’m always at a very fit standard whether I’ve got a fight coming up or not. He [Ochieng] caught me with a few good body shots and that was the difference so me and my dad have been working on making sure that doesn’t happen again. I’m desperate to get back to title class because I definitely feel I belong there and the way back starts at the Echo Arena next week.”

COLDWELL BOXING OFFERS REDUCED TICKETS FOR AMATEURS U16

COLDWELL BOXING is delighted to announce that amateur boxers under the age of sixteen will be able to watch their shows for just £10.

Starting with the Liverpool Echo Arena bill headlined by Tony Bellew's British title clash with Danny McIntosh on April 27, amateur boxers can pay £10 on the night for an unreserved seat. All they have to produce is their medical card and photo i.d when paying for their ticket.

For the upcoming Birmingham (Friday 11 May) and Rotherham (Friday 8th June) shows, £3 out of every ticket bought will be given to their amateur club and the offer will also be available on all of their future shows.

Entry into professional shows is expensive, especially in the current financial climate, and promoter Dave Coldwell is happy to give something back to the sport.

Coldwell said: "We feel that many of our fans and stars of the future cannot get to watch boxing live because times are hard right now and by putting this offer into practice we are doing our bit to help the sport grow.

"I appreciate that the amateur clubs put their time and effort in without much financial reward and it's difficult for them to keep going. £3 per ticket is only a small help, but if they become a regular follower of our shows maybe it can add up to pay a bill over the course of a year.

"A lot of kids shouldn't have to miss out on going to see the big fights because watching the top shows is a great experience for them and we're very happy to be able to offer this deal."
